Yes you can. It’s like leasing any other office equipment or a car. You pay a small monthly payment instead of a substantial upfront investment. You can customoze your payment plan so your payment is within the savings and your cash flow remains net positive.

Why lease?

Keep cash flow

Still can access funds from bank

Doesn’t show on balance sheet, income statement

Isn’t a liability

Buyout at the end of the term

You can now even lease small projects worth $3000.00 or above. This makes sure you start saving immidiately and have a smart lighting system at your business that improves productivity.

Although a preferred choice of lighting for decades for many facilities, fluorescent tube lights are now being replaced by more efficient and durable LED tube lights. Below is my attempt at analyzing whether it is worth retrofitting your existing fluorescent troffers to LED lights.

Energy Use: Fluorescent vs. LED

Other benefits of LED T8’s:

Maintenance savings: LED T8’s last up to 50,000 hours as opposed to 20,000 hours for fluorescent (That translates to over 6 years non-stop use!)

LED’s turn on instantly

No humming noise or flickering

No mercury or other toxic material

LED’s are dimmer and motion sensor compatible

Other factors

Retrofitting an existing fluorescent lighting system to LED’s is an important and expensive business decision, it is important to keep in mind a few other things that might be helpful:

How long are the lights turned on for?

Does your facility require LED T8’s or LED panels are a better option for enhanced aesthetics?

Is your facility 120 volt or 347 volt?

Would it help putting in sensors and dimmers to further reduce energy consumption?

Does your business qualify for any government grants/incentives?

How many fixtures are you thinking or retrofitting? A large number of retrofit means lower cost per unit of retrofit kits and reduced labor.

One of the most common question that is being asked today in the lighting industry is whether the time is right to switch to LEDs. The answer for the most part is, yes with a few exceptions. Below are some thoughts that may help if you are considering retrofitting your business to LED lights.

Energy efficiency

What type of lights are you currently using?

If the answer is incandescent (including halogen) then its a no brainer. Switch to LEDs. LEDs use a fraction of the energy as incandescent bulbs and can last 20 times longer. The payback period for retrofitting incandescent to LEDs is usually less than a year and can be as little as a few months especially if government grants are considered (Many if not most provinces and states offer these).

Fluorescent. For the most part the answer is yes. LEDs use less than half of the energy that fluorescent lamps use and last many times longer. LEDs are also compatible with dimmers and motion sensors, further reducing energy consumption in areas like garages and warehouses. However, It may be a good idea to wait until the old fluorescent bulbs burn out if the lights are kept on only for a few hours.

HID (High Intensity Discharge) – Although HIDs are much more efficient than incandescent and fluorescent, they still consume considerably more energy than LEDs. In some cases HID’s can be replaced with LEDs to cut the energy consumption by 70 percent. Quality of light emitted by HID lamps is amongst the worst – considerably limiting their use and utility. Additionally, lumen output of HIDs depreciates much more rapidly than LEDs, making their replacement necessary. Bottom line: it is time to start looking for replacements for HIDs and LEDs are a perfect fit.

How long are the lights on for?

If the lights are on for more than a few hours then it makes sense to switch to LEDs. If the light are only turned on for a few hours or as needed – in storage rooms etc. – then it might be a good idea to wait until the bulbs burn out. Ultimately the earlier you switch, the earlier the savings will begin and the lesser it will cost to light your facility.

Aesthetics

There are other advantages to LEDs. They turn on instantly and do not flicker. LEDs are also much are much more compact than traditional lamps allowing a much more versatile use. LEDs are also advantageous when it comes to color temperature, i.e. color of light, LEDs can be much more versatile and colors can be adjusted in many cases.

Maintenance Savings

Since LEDs are semiconductors that give off light, they do not burn out as often. LEDs on average have a lifespan of around 25,000 hours and some can last up to 100,000 hours. Compare this with incandescent lamps with a lifespan of 2,000 hours, fluorescent and HID of less than 10,000 hours. This means having LEDs will result in fewer replacements and saving precious resources that go in purchasing and replacing burnt out bulbs. As a result businesses with LEDs can cut their operational cost by saving a lot in maintenance cost in addition to the energy savings.

Over the next decade, we will see most of the lights around us replaced with LEDs. Businesses and consumers alike are catching up with the technology and enjoying enormous financial benefits while helping the environment. Keep an eye on the lights around you.

Lighting expenses constitute a major component of your building’s operating budget. While selecting lighting equipment, our focus remain on the cost, ease of use and these days everyone considers its environmental impact. Many of the nations are promoting usage of LED lights because of their energy efficiency and smaller carbon imprint compared to conventional halogen or fluorescent lights.

What are LED Retrofit Kits?

LED Retrofit kits are used to retrofit existing HID, fluorescent and other traditional fixtures to energy efficient LED’s. Process can involve removing existing ballasts and lamps and installing LED lamps and associated drivers. Basically the fixture remains intact, only lamps and ballasts may be changed. Once example is removing T8 lamps and electronic ballasts from a fluorescent fixture and installing LED T8s with an external driver (or the driver can be inside the lamp). Another example could be removing ballast and metal halide lamp from a high bay and installing LED lamp and a driver instead. This can be a cheaper way to attain energy efficiency without having to change the fixture.

LED retrofit kits are quite popular because of their ease of use, economical value while reducing energy energy. Many governments, including Ontario are now disbursing rebates and incentives for LED retrofits. Incentives on LED Retrofit may vary nation to nation, for example, LED Retrofit incentive in Ontario are substantial, in fact up to 50% of the project costs can be covered by saveONenergy rebates. Rebates and incentives are just another reason why many of the commercial and residential building owners are opting for LED Retrofit across Ontario.
Here are few benefits of LED Retrofit kits :
1. Energy efficient
LED bulbs consume less energy compared to halogen bulbs or CFLs . LED retrofits are highly energy efficient. You can use DIY LED Retrofit tools to compare how much energy you can save and how much incentive you will get with each LED Retrofit in Canada.
2. Versatile
LED bulbs are one of the favorite choices among the electricians and commercial building managers, due to their huge applications. They can be used for minute signals to huge parking and street lights. They come in handy in offices, commercial buildings, garages , parking lot , streets , stadiums and even homes. The kits are designed to fit almost any given place with illumination needs.
3. Long Lasting LEDs
The LED lights have one more competitive edge over conventional halogen or fluorescent lights , LED lights have longer life span, they do not burn out even for thousands of hours thereby becoming an inexpensive lighting solution in the long run.
4. The retrofit kits can have exceptional dimming capacity
They offer maximum brightness instantly as compared to other lighting systems. In addition, you can easily regulate the brightness according to your needs and what you find most appropriate for the given setting. It means, therefore that you can still enjoy even lower energy use by dimming to the right levels.
5. Health Benefits of LED Lights
LED lights do not emit ultra violet rays as compared to infrared rays and fluorescent tubes. They are free from UV transmission, thereby making the kits suitable for environments that are sensitive, such as museums, art galleries and archaeological sites.
6. Easy to Maintain
LED retrofit kit offer flawless lighting for many years and there is no need for regular replacement. The kits are functional and do not require much maintenance to keep them functional as they are designed to do.

If your business relies on metal halide highbays for lighting your facility then it is time to start saving some serious money by switching to LED lights. Not only you will save tons of money in electricity and maintenance, you can also get better light and better controls like motion sensors and dimming that provide even more savings. The potential for savings is enormous, let’s take a look.

Energy Savings

Metal Halides use almost three times more energy than a LED fixture would use so there is a big chunk of savings in electricity consumption alone by switching to LED lights. Let’s see an example:

400 watt metal halide lamps are fairly commonly found in metal halide highbays. Add the ballast to the equation and you have the entire fixture sucking up over 450 watts of electricity. At 12 hours daily use at the rate of $0.16kwh, this translates to $300/year in electricity consumption. Typically, a 150w LED highbay will more than sufficiently replace the 450+ watt metal halide. That is more than 60% or over $200 in energy savings alone. Add in dimmers and motions sensors and you could be saving over 90% in electricity alone.

Maintenance Savings

LED’s have an exceptionally long life span, usually lasting over 50,000 hours and sometimes even 100,000 hours. That translates to between 6 and 12 years of continuous use. On the other hand, metal halide lamps and ballasts have a different life span. Typically a metal halide lamp would last around 20,000 hours. However, that is an over estimation in many ways. Metal halide lamps light output diminishes quickly, often by 70% within the first three years. That means you may have to change the lamps once light output is no longer adequate. Ballasts pose another maintenance hassle.

Bottom line: it saves a lot of maintenance costs by replacing metal halide with LED highbays.

With enormous energy and maintenance savings along with handsome saveONenergy rebates in Ontario, ROI on your LED retrofit investment can be as low as 1 year!

Color Rendering Index, or CRI, of a lamp or fixture refers to how the light source makes the color of an object in the environment appear to human eye. Light with a higher color rendering index allows one to see the variations in its shades more clearly than light with a low color rendering index. CRI is measured of as a number on a scale from 0 to 100. The higher this number, the better is the color rendering. Below is a list of typical light sources and their respective color rendering

Light Source

As you can see LED’s have a CRI that is on the higher end when compared to other lights. Some LEDs can reach a CRI of 98+. This combined with energy efficiency and controls LED lights offer, they are the preferred choice of lighting for most applications. This is true when the applications include retail, medical facilities, inspection areas in manufacturing and quality control among others.

Are you retrofitting 347 or high volt facility lights to LED and can’t find the right voltage replacement or they are too pricey?

That’s a common problem especially in Ontario, where many of the old facilities are 347 volt and require higher voltage products. When higher voltage products are unavailable or cost too much, a simple solution is to use a step down transformer. Many compact step down transformers are available for both exterior and interior fixtures. Enclosed transformers that are “Low-Profile” and are easy to install. These are pretty cost effective and in many cases will cost less than the 347 volt fixtures.

Ontario bases, E Craftsmen, assembles some of these transformers in Canada. Particularly interesting are their Slim-Line Models, that are excellent for use with LED Slim panels (1×4, 2×2 or 2×4) or any other low wattage fixtures.

Check it out Click Here

These come completely epoxy sealed for water resistance (IP65/66) and UL listed for Canada and the US. These can be used for exterior applications. E Craftsmen also carries “Open Internal-Mount “Component” Models” for interior use.
